Using Dowel In Recycling Projects

Dowels are a very versatile woodworking supply. They can be used for many purposes. Sometimes they are quite central to a project, and at other times, their purposes in a project are rather simplistic. How impressive to use a dowel in its simplest form for a project which is as important as it, too, is simple! Use dowel with recycled clothing to create storage and carrying bags for other recyclable items and projects.

Start with an old, unwanted T-shirt. Although working with shirts that do not have holes is most time-effective, those with them may still be used. Certainly, they will require patching in order to properly contain the items placed in the bag. However, think of using cloth that requires patching, instead of discarding it, as recycling in its truest sense.

Depending on the desired size of the storage or carrying bag, you may choose to cut the T-shirt at the seam of the collar and down either sleeve, or to cut straight across the shirt starting at the underside of each sleeve. This will become the top of the bag.

If you choose to cut the shirt at the seam of the collar, you will need to either remove the sleeves and stitch the cloth together at the site, or leave the sleeves in place, but fold them inward and stitch the cloth. Obviously, cutting the shirt at the seam of the collar provides slightly more space for the bag, while cutting the shirt just below the seam of the arms will provide slightly less space.

For efficiency’s sake, stitch the bottom of the shirt together while stitching the area of the sleeves.

Next, using a wood dowel sized to preference in both length and diameter, sufficiently able to withstand the weight of the items that will be stored or carried, and based on the overall size of the shirt used, wrap the top portion of the bag on either side around the dowel to determine how much cloth will be needed to encircle it. Lightly mark the material at this point, and then stitch it widthwise. Be certain to consider enough grip so that the dowels stay relatively stationary, making carrying items much easier, but also enough release to allow for easy replacement of the dowels should they require it. Then, insert the dowel sections through on either side.

Use the bag to store books, magazines, or knitting supplies. (Go one step farther in your efforts and craft your own knitting needles using a hardwood dowel!) If curbside pickup is unavailable in your area, use the bag to cart your recycling to the nearest recycling center. Make separate storage bags for recyclable items made of aluminum, steel, and paper. By allowing for the removal of the dowel as described above, the bags can be washed should they become soiled or wet and then used again and again. Or, use the bag to store plastic department store bags and for carrying them to return to the store during your next visit there.

Incorporating Dowel In Bathroom Decor

Of all the available woodworking supplies, dowel is perhaps one of the most remarkable. In addition to being quite versatile, it is also equally economical. With this unique and beneficial combination comes the opportunity to craft home decorum or woodwork home improvements. The uses of dowel can be implemented in all areas within the home, even the bathroom. Here are some ideas for using dowel to improve your bathrooms.

Use a sturdy wooden dowel to hang a shower drape. Often the fabrics used for shower drapes are quite bulky and enhance the aesthetics of perhaps one of the typically more mundane rooms of a house. A shower drape adds beauty to a shower and the overall decor of a bathroom, while also providing additional privacy. The same concept is applicable to curtains or valances in the bathroom. Depending upon the weight of the fabric, a dowel can be used to add both beauty and privacy within the bathroom. With little more than the purchase of the necessary fabric, a dowel, and some mounting supplies, an improvement can be made quickly and relatively inexpensively.

Consider using wood dowels for storage as well. In a similar fashion, a free-standing towel storage rack can be made much like a quilt rack. If doing laundry is off by several days or is delayed, this nifty contraption provides a great way to allow wet, freshly used towels to dry, thereby avoiding a mildew mess.

Avoid the clutter that comes from using the back of a toilet as a means of storage. Use wood dowel to craft a small magazine, book, or newspaper rack. For bathrooms with limited space, consider adding the rack to the bottom of the towel storage rack. Such a contraption serves a dual function, saves already limited space, and allows the craftsman to explore many creative options that result in the finished item.

Again for bathrooms with limited space or for those whose storage or linen closets may be housed outside of the bathroom itself, consider a novice craft for storage by creating a toilet paper dispenser. A dowel can be used as a free-standing towel paper dispenser. Mount the dowel to a wooden base and place extra rolls of toilet paper one on top of the other on a nine to 12 inch piece of dowel. The crafter is able to determine the size best suited to his or her family’s needs and bathroom decor. Consider woodworking a back that is attached to the wooden base and runs vertically parallel to the dowel itself. The back can be ornate or simply carved, painted or stained.

Another simple means by which to provide some storage is by crafting an over- the-door hanger. Use wood dowel as pegs on which to hang bathrobes, pajamas, or a change of clothes. A pegged over-the-door hanger can also be made and used as an alternative for, or in addition to, a free-standing towel rack for hanging towels.

These are just a few simple ideas for using hardwood dowel to improve one’s bathroom decor or storage. However, so many more creative possibilities exist. Using dowel, your imagination, and your woodworking skills, great things can happen!

Woodworking Safety Tips

Woodworking can be a very enjoyable hobby, but it does involve some risks. Besides the obvious cut injuries that you might expect, there are also hazards for your eyes, body, ears, and lungs. Here we will discuss how to best protect your precious organs from the dust hazards that go along with woodworking.

1) Always do a quick check with yourself to make sure that you’ve thought of everything that has to do with safety. It’s important to have routine safety checks, whether you’re planning on working for hours on a project, or just making a quick adjustment to a piece. Following your own rules every time could save you from injury and disability.

2) Protecting your eyes is very important. Eye injuries while working with wood are very common. Flying debris, dust, and sanded finishes can be very hazardous to your eyes. Wood can also kick back when cut and fly into your face. Face lacerations, abrasions and blunt trauma to the head are common. Wearing protective goggles can prevent your eyes from being damaged during one of these instances.

3) Protect your body by wearing appropriate clothing. Ideally, all of your skin should be covered. Wearing a thick fabric bodysuit is always a good idea. Get yourself one that fits fairly snugly. You don’t want anything hanging off that could get snagged or tangled in equipment. This goes for sleeves, too. Sleeves should not be longer than necessary. Choose zippers over ties. Close toed shoes, work gloves, and tied back hair are a must.

4) Hearing loss and tinnitus are common ailments of the woodworker. Ear protection is a must. Power tools and equipment make a lot of noise. Long-term exposure to constant loud noises can cause you to lose your hearing. Too many people lose their hearing before they realize that something is wrong. Ear plugs are okay, but noise cancelling ear muffs are highly recommended. These, headphone style, ear muffs are made specifically to protect your ears from loud shop noises. Make a habit of wearing them every time you enter your shop.

5) Protecting your lungs is also very important. Taking off old finishes and inhaling those chemical-laden dust particles is very hazardous to your lung health and can even cause cancer. Even inhaling the dust produced when sanding or cutting common woods, like cedar, oak, birch, and willow, can cause respiratory distress. Make sure that your shop has a good dust collection system and then double up the protection by wearing a respirator or dust mask. Dust masks are an easy, inexpensive way to protect your lungs.

Working with wood often turns into a lifetime of enjoyment. Whether you like building furniture, turning a wood dowel on a lathe, making wooden toy parts, or simply experimenting with different projects, you should always put safety first. This will ensure a lifetime of enjoyment without the devastation of injury or disease that resulted from carelessness.
