How to Stock your Wood Shop

So woodworking crafts have brought you to the point of creating your own wood shop? Great! A wood shop is a safe haven for many, offering a peaceful space for creating many things. There’s nothing like working with your hands. However, there is something to be said for working with power tools, too! When you’re ready to stock your wood shop with tools of the trade, take a look at this list to make sure that you’ve got everything that you may need.

You’ll want to start by buying or building a workbench. Most people prefer a workbench or table that is up high enough to work at while standing or sitting on a stool. This will give you storage room underneath, too. You can install a shop vacuum above your workbench if you’d like. It may come in handy for cleaning up sawdust. You’ll also need some shelves and cabinets for storing your tools. Covers for saws and drills are great to have so that your equipment can stay clean while you work on other projects.

There are many cutting tools to choose from. Most can be classified as hand saws or power saws. The ones that you need depend on what you plan on doing. For instance, you will need a chain saw if you plan to fall your own trees. Backsaws are hand saws that have a stiff ridge opposite the cutting side (e.g. dovetail saw, tenon saw, sash saw, and the gent’s saw. These are used for hand cutting precise lines. Power saws are good for cutting large pieces and rough cuts. There are circular saws, radial arm saws, table saws, band saws, and miter saws.

You will need tools to hold your work. Most woodworkers use horses, a vice, and a bench hook regularly. You can mount your vice to your workbench so that it’s always easy to access and is securely fastened. A bench hook can be easily built. It’s basically a place where you can press boards up against a straight edge while using hand saws. It has a lip underneath to “hook” it to the workbench so that you can put pressure on the wood that you’re working on.

There are many other tools that help to shape or hold wood. There are many clamps that work well with different types of saws. Hammers, mallets, drills and screwdrivers are commonly used. Chisels, planers, a lathe, and many types of sanders are used in shaping and finishing.

Once you have your work surfaces, support items, and tools, you can begin stocking your woodshop with wood. A cedar wood cabinet is useful for storing wood that is easily affected by the humidity. Remember that you can store large pieces overhead on ceiling racks to save space in your woodshop. Stock up on other wood parts and hardware that you may need. You may need long nails down to finishing nails, screws, bolts, nuts, and washers. Cabinet handles and drawer pulls are also nice to have. Different species of wood in varying sizes and shapes can be useful in many projects. Keep a “scrap” pile of pieces that you may be able to use again. A wood dowel, especially a hardwood dowel, can be used to fashion joint pegs and many other useful items. Keep some around for future projects.

Choosing a Combination Square

The combination square is incredibly versatile in woodworking and should be a staple in your tool box. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, the combination square will prove to be useful in almost every project you do. This is likely to be a tool that you keep and use for a very long time, so it’s one of the ones that we recommend doing your research on before you buy. Investing a little in a quality combination square with all of the extras can help you avoid mistakes and make more precise measurements on all types of items.

The combination square is made of steel. It consists of a ruler and a sliding square head. Simply loosen the bolt to slide the square head up and down the ruler, then tighten to fix it in place. Some will have a protractor head, and some will have a third piece, the center head. Here we will discuss the different applications of the combination square and each of the specialty head attachments. Use this guide to help you determine which features to look for and how to use each one.

The basic combination square will usually have a bubble level in the square head. If the one you’re looking at doesn’t have the level, then you should probably reconsider. The level is very useful and you’ll surely miss it if your combination square doesn’t have one. Another thing to look for on a basic combination square is a forty-five degree angle feature. Some will only have a ninety degree face and are less useful. The last thing to look for on the basic combination square is the scriber. The scriber is a small rod sharpened to a point. The scriber is used to cut a thin guideline in your wood project. These lines will allow you to make more precise measurements and more accurate match-ups than a pencil line will. Pencil lines are sometimes hard to see or end up inaccurate due to inconsistencies in wood grain.

If you want to kick it up a notch, look for the combination square that has a protractor head. The protractor head can measure many different angles, allowing you to create precise angles and curves. Look for a protractor head that also has another bubble level. You will need to know that everything is level before you determine the angle that it needs to be at. Most protractor heads will also have a scriber, like the basic square head.

The last optional combination square piece is the center head. This attachment is used for determining the center of a circular project, like a plate, or the center of a dowel. Dowels and other round woodworking pieces should be measured on a center head, because it is very hard to determine the exact center of something without it. If your project is not perfectly round, you can use the center head around each edge to establish the most central point. To use the center head, place the circular edge into the wedge and mark a line. Repeat from another side of the dowel or round wood piece and draw another line. The intersection of the two lines should be the exact center.

Getting Started with Woodworking Tools

Woodworking is a great hobby to get into. Many people worry about getting started because they imagine that the tools are very expensive. There are a lot of expensive tools on the market, but as you get started, you’ll realize that a lot of the fancy tools out there are not necessary for completing many projects.

Choose a project that takes minimal tools to get started. As your skills progress, you may want to add in a tool here or there to start your collection. You don’t need to go out and buy all of the tools that you’ll ever need in one fail swoop. You will probably need a chisel, a hacksaw, some clamps, and a level or square to get started. Just do a little research and determine what you need before you go to the store. The woodworking section may seem overwhelming at first.

As you progress, you may start looking into some power tools. Not all are created equal. To avoid wasting money on tools that will break or not perform how you need them to, look at customer reviews or talk to a friend that has tried them. Cheaper doesn’t always mean lower quality, however. You could get some great deals on quality power tools by finding last year’s model on sale. You can find tools on auction sites for a lot cheaper than in retail stores. If it is a real specialty tool, you might be better off renting or borrowing it instead of investing in something that you may rarely use.

The next thing to consider is the type of wood that you use. Softer woods are easier to work with and are recommended for beginners. Hard woods are harder to work with and cost more, so mistakes can be more costly. Pine is generally cheap and easy to work with.

Before you go investing in a lot of woodworking books, check out what your library has to offer. There are often times a lot of useful books at the library that you can check out and use for tips and free plans. There are also a lot of sites on the internet that offer free plans, along with tips and reviews from people that have tried them. Save that money for the tools that you will inevitably want to buy!

If you want to build furniture, cabinets, shelves, or other household items, it might serve you well to research “joinery” before you begin. There are many different ways to join two pieces of wood together. The type of joint that you use will depend on the intended purpose of the project. The more weight the joint will need to hold, the more sturdy and secure the joint will need to be. Don’t be afraid to learn how to use dowels for joints. Using a dowel rod to create a joint gives it strength and helps you to create a smooth look, without a lot of screws or nails showing.
